As co-chair of Toys for Tots of East Pasco, I encounter each year an alarming escalation in the number of families living in abject poverty. As their numbers grow, their support systems seem to be dwindling. This is further complicated by the ever-rising cost of living. It is easy to predict that these families are headed for catastrophe. Whose problem is it? I submit it is not our federal government or state, but the province of each local community.
By creating a positive and nurturing relationship between families and our communities, we could effectively assist children. If each of our businesses, churches, service organizations and other caring citizens stepped forward, each could help by assuming some of the child-care burdens of struggling parents - everything from providing toothbrushes to mentoring and tutoring. If times get worse, these children will increasingly need our help. Wise ol' Ben Franklin put it best: "To pour forth benefit for the common good is divine."
